Sky City Shoots for the Moon and Lands

Just one night before the official opening of new Augusta venue Sky City, co-owners Eric Kinlaw and brothers Coco and Jayson Rubio invited downtown supporters in for a preview of what may be the hottest venue to hit Augusta in a while. Preceded by weeks of hype, the doors of Sky City were opened for all to see and hear if the venue would live up to all reports and in the end the answer would have to be a resounding YES!

Featuring new sound, lights, decorations and a fresh new coat of paint, Sky City has turned out to be all that we’ve heard and more. With a chance to hear the new sound and see the new lights courtesy of a rocking (yes I said ROCKING) set by the Shaun Piazza Band, it has to be said that Sky City has set the new bar for what a concert venue should be in Augusta. In a mostly brick-walled room known for giving forth many a muddy sounding concert, the new system at Sky City has as clear and concise a clarity as could be heard in the best of big city venues with great sound. But sound and lights ain’t everything.

In the dimly lit venue many may not notice much of a difference over the look of The Mission, the previous club housed at the current Sky City location, but while the changes may be subtle, they have been made. The front bar has an interested mix of differently shaped tables and the area that was once the front stage is now a cool hip chill area. The overall paint is darker except for in one instance of which I feel compelled to warn anyone with funny vision. Walking from the dark back bar into the brightly colored and lit bathrooms can be tricky, sort of like leaving a movie theater after an afternoon matinĂ©e and being blinded by the sunlight. Small price to pay…drinkers just might want to be careful during trips to the can to make room for more tall boy PBR’s.

Will this be the venue of dreams? If they build it…will they come? Let’s hope so because Sky City is one helluva venue! But don’t take our word for it…the venue officially opens with 80’s night on First Friday and you can check out photos of Sky City’s preview event by clicking http://www.flickr.com/photos/lokalloudness/sets/72157605457208290/
