It’s never been said that five is the most popular number out there. Sure you can count easy when counting by five and of course fifth anniversaries can be fun but in todays crazy music world where more is good and even more is the ultimate in excess more often than not, five is not considered enough.
Joe Graves and the Dirty Left Hand think otherwise and on the band’s latest CD We’ve Hit Ground, Graves and crew prove that sometimes all you really need is, well five.
Created by five very unique individuals and containing five new tracks, We’ve Hit Ground is an example in sticking with the beef and tossing out the fluff. While so many full-length albums hit the market with a few choice tunes surrounded with filler, bands like Joe Graves and the Dirty Left Hand choose to give you the tasty entree as opposed to an endless trip to the bland buffet.
We’ve Hit Ground kicks off raw and rawking with opening track “1965″, and from track to track until the CDs title track and closer, We’ve Hit Ground is a constant dirty crunchfest of melodic rock tunes with overtones that delve into many styles from punk to pop to alternative. This in itself is not unimagineable as the five fine folks that make up the band have about as diverse a musical listening background as you can get. Sure you could probably find some common ground if you dumped all five of the Dirty Left Hand’s CDs on the carpet but at the same each would have some personal oddities peppered on top as well.
It could be this crazy mix of influences found on We’ve Hit Ground that makes it possible for fans of everything from late 70’s NY punk to 80’s alternative to 90’s grunge and even (eeek!) modern emo to get into songs like “Shortest Hour”, “My Cup is Full”, or “Call All the Fellows”. It could be that we just need a good, simple, raw, rock album right now. It could just be that all we really need is a handful of good tunes.
A handful is a good thing…
