Augusta Music History 101 - May 5, 1898/1901

Influential blues singer, songwriter and 12-string finger picking guitarist William Samuel McTier, better known as Blind Willie McTell, is born on this day in 1898 or 1901, depending on reports, in Thomson, Georgia. McTell, born blind in one eye, would lose all remaining vision by late childhood. After his father left and his mother passed away, McTell would become a vagabond busker before starting his recording career with Atlanta’s Victor Records in 1927. McTell would go on to record for a variety of record labels under many different names including Blind Willie McTell (Victor and Decca), Blind Sammie (Columbia), Georgia Bill (Okeh), Hot Shot Willie (Victor), Blind Willie (Vocalion), Red Hot Willie Glaze (Bluebird), Barrelhouse Sammie (Atlantic) and Pig & Whistle Red (Regal). McTell recorded 149 songs between 1927 and 1956 before passing away from a stroke in Milledgeville in 1959.
