One Month in and Here We Go…

As if 2007 wasn’t excited enough lo-and-behold the 2008 music season has kicked off with a bang with a fury of new music already infecting the ears of Augusta music fans! And that was just in January! But before we get into that…the annual Choice Awards are less than a week a way and once again it’s an opportunity to show appreciation for the great artists in our uniquely tight knit community.

Leading the way are Veara with 8 award nominations including 2 in the song category and for the second straight year Edison Project make a strong showing with 7 nominations, 9 if you count that the Augusta quartet are not only nominated for fave cd of 2007, but are also on two of the other cds nominated (12 Bands of Christmas and Live at Sector 7G). Lots of familiar names plus some news ones! As usual this looks to be one of the great venue events of the year and a great way to kick off what looks to be another killer year of lokal music.

Now getting back to 2008…new sounds have already begun to rise in this new year. As reported recently singer-songwriter Will McCranie has already released a great limited edition ep and the feedback has been positive so far. Other artists working on new material include The Cubists, Joe Graves and the Dirty Left Hand, and Radar Cinema, all who have new music previews on their myspace pages and all well worth the listen. Dirty Sons of Ireland have been hard at work laying down tracks at Sector 7G and artists currently reported as being in the woodshed include American Skin and G-City Rockers. Any new artists sporting new sounds or on the verge of unleashing some can feel free to shoot us a line here at Lokal Loudness so we can get the word out.

Had lunch the other day with my better half and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a live set by soulful country rock duo The Mason Jars. Not only was the food great as usual but it was also a treat to hear a new act and enjoy the music while being able to share the experience with a dining companion. Here’s to a great idea that I hope will turn into a regular thing at Joe’s.

This past week ended in sort of a surreal fashion as I found myself on the other end of a phone conversation with legendary artist Art Garfunkel. Needless to say I had no clue what to expect but Paul Simon’s former tag team partner was warm, witty, and comforting even at one point singing Irving Berlin’s “What’ll I Do” to me. That’s right. Art friggin’ Garfunkel sang to me over the phone! Crazy!

Well here’s to everyone having a great lokal music week. I know I will!

Your Brother-in-Arms,

Stoney
